Topic: Chilled Water Systems
Speaker: Susanna Hanson, Principal Engineer, CEM, DGCP
This presentation discusses ways to improve the design and operation of chilled-water systems and increase the likelihood of persistently high performance. We will focus on components and operation of the chilled water plant besides the chiller, including many operational effects which are not quantifiable in energy analysis programs. Topics will include the mitigations for Low-Delta T syndrome, configuration-specific optimizations and design considerations to improve chilled water system performance.
Susanna Hanson is a principal engineer for Trane, in the Systems Development group in La Crosse. Her specialties are chilled water systems and energy codes.
During her 21 years with the company, Susanna has served in technical roles with diverse responsibilities, from TRACE support and development, to chiller support and system development. Susanna is a Certified Energy Manager who helps Ingersoll Rand “walk the talk” of its Climate Commitment. She advises product development teams on the future of energy codes. She also influences Ingersoll Rand corporate sustainability projects including system optimization, energy storage systems, and energy and water savings estimates.
Susanna is a communicator and an industry advocate. She speaks and writes primarily on chilled water systems, energy storage, energy codes, and HVAC systems applications. She contributed to the Encyclopedia of Energy Engineering. She is currently serving ASHRAE as the assistant chair for Region VI, is a past region treasurer, past chapter president (2003-04), and is a trustee of the ASHRAE Foundation. She chaired the regional conference in 2013 and has presented at society and chapter meetings throughout the U.S. She was a 12-year voting member of ASHRAE 90.1, and now serves on the ASHRAE Standards committee. She received the ASHRAE Distinguished Service Award in 2015.
Susanna has a bachelor’s degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Florida, and she lives with her family in La Crosse. Her hobbies include sailing and alpine skiing.
